Suhr is an American manufacturer of boutique electric guitars and basses, amplifiers, pedals and pickups. This company has a long-standing tradition of building top-quality instruments with exceptional playability.
Out of the desire to finally find the perfect instrument for his own work as a musician, John Suhr dedicated himself to guitar manufacturing for the first time in the 1970s. As part of his work for Rudy Pensa at Rudy's Music Stop (New York City), in the early 80s he offered his first guitar creations for sale under the brand name Pensa-Suhr. It didn’t take long until well-known guitarists such as Mark Knopfler, Lou Reed or Eric Clapton learned to appreciate the manufacturing quality of these instruments. Between 1991 and 1995, around 50 Suhr-made guitars were created, but John’s main focus in this period was on the construction of amplifiers, which he conceived together with Bob Bradshaw. Before John made his dream come true in 1997 with founding a small custom guitar company with Steve Smith under his own name, he worked two years as Senior Master Builder at the Fender Custom Shop.
Suhr is today building guitars as well as amplifiers, pedals and pickups. In addition to the "Classic" and "Classic T" series that are based on Fender's stratocasters and telecasters, the "Modern" series, which was designed in the style of the Superstrat, also enjoys great popularity. Suhr also offers a rich custom shop program with their vast experience in boutique guitar making. If you are interested in a one-off custom-shop Suhr instrument, do not hesitate to contact us.
